South Africa Mine Shooting

Yesterday (16/8/12) police in South Africa opened fire on striking miners at the Lomin Marikana platinum out side Johannesburg killing 30. Coming between the Olympic games and the para-Olympic games and during the third cricket test between England and South Africa a lot of people are very interested to know exactly what happened. However the footage I saw of the incident at a protest that had already seen around a dozen people killed showed armed protesters advancing as if to attack a group of police officers who responded by returning fire. Therefore I'm inclined to give the police the benefit of the doubt for now.

Of course the whole incident does raise questions about the situation in Syria because if we were to apply the standard that's been applied to Syria and Libya the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) would now be meeting to impose sanctions against South Africa and prepare for foreign military intervention.

09:35 on 17/8/12.
