And I'm about to be sedated.
With less then 24 hours until the 2012 London Olympics are to draw to a close there have been very few political controversies as the final few medals have been awarded. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has told the South Korean delegation that Park Jong-woo is to be banned from the medal ceremony after he displayed a political sign about the Dokdo/Takeshima island dispute at the end of South Korea's victory over Japan in yesterday's (10/8/12) bronze medal men's soccer play-off. This of course is something of a gift from the IOC and the British hosts to China for all the good work they've been doing supressing political and individual freedoms.
Amongst the final medals to be awarded TeamGB won three more golds and a bronze. Two of the these golds were awarded in men's kayaking and boxing and seem to have been won fair and square. Tom Daley's bronze the 10m men's individual diving was more controversial with that infamous home advantage playing a large part because it is unlikely that Daley would have been given a do-over in his first dive if he'd been competing in any other nation. On the plus side though at least 'Daley Do-Over' has got a new nickname now.
The most political medal of the day though went to TeamGB's Mo Farah in the men's 5000m. It wasn't so much Farah's victory that was the problem that the Somali-born Brit finished ahead of Ethipoia's Dejen Gebremeskel and Kenya's Thomas Longosiwa. This is a problem because both Ethiopia and Kenya have been heavily involved in the military operation in Somalia to the point where many Somalians must feel like they've been invaded by Ethiopia and Kenya. Therefore the image of the British backed Somali defeating the Ethiopians and the Kenyans will be spun to generate support within Somalia for the new government/constitution. I'm sure no-one will be more annoyed about this then Mo Farah himself because the only reason why he won the actual race was because he was clearly much better then any of the other people competing.
Speaking of which Jamaica's men's 4x100m relay including Usain Bolt not only won the gold medal but set a new world record. This is particularly significant for Bolt because he has now achieved the almost impossible feat of winning three gold medals at two successive Olympics. Seriously if he's going to compete in 2016 we should force him to take up archery but I've got a nasty feeling he'll be quite good at that too.
Oh and after Mo Farah's wife greeted his winning a second Olympic gold medal with the sort of moodiness that only a heavily pregnant woman can achieve I'd just like to point out that if one more person suggests that the excitement of the Olympics could cause Mrs Farah to give birth at any moment I will slap them. That's because she's only 7 months pregnant and the last time I checked human pregnancies last for 9 months. Not that it's any of my business.
23:59 on 11/8/12.
