Despite issuing an ultimatum that workers must return to work at the Marikana platinum mine today mine owners Lonmin have extended that deadline until tomorrow (21/8/12). This comes amid rumours that Lonmin could be forced into a share issue to remain solvent during the strike. However the National Union of Miners (NUM) and the Association of Mine and Construction Union (AMCU) have still been negotiating with Lonmin separately with the NUM ordering their members back to work today.
This is a shame because while I can't support Julius Malema's call to nationalise the mine the South African government could easily strip Lonmin of it's concession and give to another mining company.
18:35 on 20/8/12.
