Today mass killer Anders Behring Breivik has been convicted of 77 murders committed during a twin bomb attack and mass shooting in Norway last August. Breivik has been sentenced to 21 years in prison and must serve a minimum of 10 years. His detention can be extended beyond those 21 years if he still presents a threat to the public.
However this is most certainly not the same as the Court declaring Breivik sane. In fact a central part of the prosecution's case was that Breivik suffers from a severe mental illness characterized by severe delusions especially about his own importance. All the Court has done is ruled that despite this mental illness Breivik was criminally responsible for his actions.
