I have a general rule. That I do not cover Eurovison entries while the Song Contest is underway.

In order to protect the integrity of the competition.

The Song Contest ends when the result is released.

So we're all just going to have to wait for the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) to do that.

Eurovision 2022: Is Rock Really Back? Pt.2

To be read as a direct continuation of Part 1; https://watchitdie.blogspot.com/2022/05/eurovision-2022-is-rock-really-back.html

It is not just at this year's Song Contest where Rock music has been seeing a resurgence. It also seems to be making a comeback across western societies in general.

The prime example would be the US singer Willow Smith. Although I'm not sure how indicative that is of a wider trend.

Willow Smith's mother is Jada Pinkett-Smith. Believe it or not, Jada Pinkett-Smith used to be the lead singer in the Heavy Metal band; "Wicked Wisdom." So that is clearly just what they do in the Smith household.

Jada Pinkett-Smith's entire career as Black woman who is the lead singer in a Heavy Metal band. A legacy which now seems to have been passed down to her daughter. Touches on the issue of America's very narrow view of what a Black person is allowed to be.

So Black people aren't allowed to like, let alone perform, Heavy Metal music. Just as they're not allowed to like or perform Country music. Instead all Black American people must pretend to be gangsters and street thugs while listening only to Rap and Hip-Hop music.

Although, obviously that is more of a US issue than a European issue. Many European nations, certainly in the East, have no idea what Black people are. They've certainly none of their own.

However Covid was not the only pox that the World suffered during 2020

The entirely self-inflicted death of George Floyd combined with the Pandemic restrictions. Triggered a sort of collective mental breakdown in the form of the Black Lives Matter campaign.

Within the, particularly British, music and entertainment industry. The collective mental breakdown that was Black Lives Matter. Fuelled a frenzied pursuit of the vaguely defined; "Inclusivity."

Suddenly it seemed that everyone wanted a little ethnic pet of their own. So even the absolute worst dross of the Rap and Hip Hop genres suddenly found themselves getting signed to record labels and heavily promoted with TV and Radio airplay.

It is as if some extremely rich, privileged White people. Are still genuinely surprised that some Black people can read out loud.

Rap and Hip Hop music are, traditionally, entirely electronic.

So Eurovision choosing Rock music and acts playing actual, physical musical instruments. Seems to be something of a pushback against Black Lives Matter. Particularly the absolutely awful music the thirst for inclusivity has spawned.

As I'm sure Jada Pinkett-Smith is well aware. Sections of the Rock, Punk and, particularly, Metal scene can be extremely racist. Full-on Nazi, Neo-Nazi and White Supremacist.

Something which is particularly relevant now the World and particularly Europe finds itself suffering deeply. Due to NATO's overindulgence and encouragement of Ukrainian Nazis, Neo-Nazis and White Supremacists.

That is something I hope to expand or more fully in discussing Ukraine's own entries. Ukraine's entry this year is literally a side project of one of the members of the band who were Ukraine's entry last year.

This resurgence of Rock is not just limited to Willow Smith.

The US singer Olivia Rodrigo also has angsty pop-Punk, Grunge, Rock elements to her work. Something she's certainly been keen to play up with her collaborations with early-2000's pop-Punk star Avril Lavigne.

The return to Rock also seems to extend beyond the world of music into the mainstream.

Kourtney Kardashian has been in a long-term relationship with Travis Barker. Who was the drummer with the late 1990's pop-Punk band Blink-182. Before joining The Transplants, a side project of the much more serious Punk band Rancid.

Travis Barker has been recently collaborating with Willow Smith. I understand that Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker got legally married on the day of the Eurovision Grand Final.

Then there is Machine Gun Kelly, who San Marino's Achille Lauro was very much aimed at this year.

Although that was just a minor element of a stand-out act. Named after a ship hijacked by the Palestinian Liberation Army (PLA). Led by a commander who was eventually captured after the 2003 Invasion of Iraq.

I don't really know what genre of music Machine Gun Kelly performs. However from his tattoos and general attitude he certainly looks and acts like a Rock star.

Since early 2020 Machine Gun Kelly has been in a long-term relationship with Megan Fox. Through their respective partners Megan Fox and Kourtney Kardashian seem to have become friends.

Megan Fox used to be married to Brian Austin Green, with whom she has three children. They got together while Brian Austin Green while he was working on the TV show; "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles."

This was the first big project for Summer Glau after the; "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" spin-off; "Firefly." Unfortunately not knowing about Firefly, let alone her role in it. Terminator; The Sarah Connor Chronicles is how I came to ruin Summer Glau's career.

So Megan Fox and I have certainly been aware of each other for the best part of decade.

Which is probably how she came to play the role of my Israeli Jewish, bisexual girlfriend in the Eminem video; "Love the Way You Lie." With Rihanna playing the role of my girlfriend's girlfriend.

I think Megan Fox might actually have met one of my mothers in real-life. While making a documentary about Stonehenge.

When I arrived in Salisbury, the day after Megan Fox had left. I was certainly faced with a lot of questions about that American woman with the camera crew and gaggle of children in tow.

It almost goes without saying. That Kourtney Kardashian and Kim Kardashian definitely know each other.

Prior to the Great American Bell Ringing of October 2021. Kim Kardashian and I were Social Media or; "Facebook Friends."

Which does pose the question;

"Is this resurgence of Rock entirely my fault?!"

At the time of the 2021 Song Contest I was starting to resume contact with Miley Cyrus, for the first time in about 8 years. Exploring the possibility of some sort of relationship developing between us.

I think that even us who were never that sure who she was or why she was famous. Then have actively ignored her for the past 8 years. Are aware that Miley Cyrus has been something of a life journey.

From spoiled, rich White girl. To supposedly bisexual Punk-Rock chick.

Personally I've always had my doubts about this.

It seems too close to the character arc of "Abby Parker." From the US TV show; "The Deuce."

My brother gave me Season 1 of The Deuce for Christmas in 2018. At the height of my involvement in the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and associated groups in Syria and Iraq.

My brother then very loudly announced. That he had asked his Indian Muslim girlfriend to marry him. As the pair celebrated Christmas.

Making it seem as though my entire family was on some weird sex crusade against Islam.

My fury was only compounded. By the fact that this was the same day it emerged that Miley Cyrus, of all people! Had managed to get married quietly, in secret.

Miley Cyrus of course helped organise the 2017 benefit concert. For victims of the ISIL bombing of the Manchester Arena.

A big feature of Miley Cyrus' supposed transition to Punk-Rock chick is her emulation of Debbie Harry. Lead singer of the band Blondie.

Blondie are actually a; "New Wave" band. New Wave being a small, short-lived but important genre in the history of music.

As I seem to have been writing about constantly for two years. All western popular music can really trace its roots to the birth of Jazz and Blues.

Blues music eventually became Rock music. While Rock music eventually became ridiculously self-indulgent and overblown.

"In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" by Iron Butterfly being a case in point. A 17 minute and 3 second case in point.

Punk emerged as a fast, short, stripped-back rebellion against how ridiculously self-indulgent and bloated Rock had become.

This led to accusations that Punk is not a real form of music. It's just noise being made by people who can't even play their instruments.

The Sex Pistols were always more of a performance art piece than a band. However Sid Vicious certainly didn't have a musical bone in his body.

All the bass guitar parts on Sex Pistols songs are played by someone else entirely. They just stuck Sid Vicious up on stage because he looked the part.

However many Punk artists are actually very technically accomplished musicians. If your ears and brain can keep up then many songs hark back to the melodies of the birth of Rock n' Roll.

New Wave really expanded on the musical abilities of Punk. Some New Wave bands like Spandau Ballet started playing about with synthesisers and other new, microprocessor based, instruments.

From there Electronic Dance Music (EDM) emerged. EDM seeming to be the main form of western Pop music at the moment.

Punk and New Wave is a genre and era that I'm actually quite knowledgeable about.

I actually attended the same, essentially, Community College as the Sex Pistol's manager Malcolm McLaren. Although many years later. It was there where I met my Israel Jewish, bisexual girlfriend.

So hearing that Miley Cyrus might be interested in that type of music. I started suggesting some other, much more obscure, songs that she might also like. Very much in the style of;

"Well. A lot of meddling, matchmaking friends have shoved us together. Apparently neither of us can leave until we at least try talking to each other."

"Do you want to talk about this?"

If I had to pick a song from the genre/era to provide the theme music for the whole thing. I would choose; "Bye Bye Baby Blue" by The Undertones.

Not least because it references "This Year's Girl" by Elvis Costello. Which was used as the opening theme music for season 2 of The Deuce.

All of which seems to have found the ears of Demi Lovato. Who, like Miley Cyrus, is a Disney child actress turned popstar.

In January 2022 Demi Lovato held a "funeral" for her pop career. To mark her re-launch as a Punk-Rock artist.

Demi Lovato and I have been aware of each, other certainly since her drugs overdose in 2018.

Not least because her ex-boyfriend Wilmer Valdarrama is a cast member of the US TV show; "NCIS." One of the few cast members who wasn't also in; "From The Earth To The Moon."

Which brings me on to one of the most sickening things that Miley Cyrus and her evil clan did in 2022. A year in which they did a great many truly sickening and appalling things.

They attempted to create a fake lesbian romance between Demi Lovato and Noah Cyrus, Miley's younger sister. All while Demi Lovato is indulging this ridiculous current fad for self-selecting gender pronouns.

I think it is well established public knowledge that Demi Lovato has long struggled with mental illness, particularly eating disorders. Actual eating disorders, not the type every female celebrity seems to develop every time they need some press coverage.

I also think it is established public knowledge. That not only did Demi Lovato suffer a drugs overdose in 2018 she was also brutally raped. This near fatal drugs overdose has left her with serious, long-term heath problems. I think she is now legally blind.

Although I've not seen it. I gather this was all covered in detail in the 2021 Netflix documentary; "Demi Lovato: Dancing With The Devil."

I don't want to further add to the stigma surrounding Demi Lovato.

However what we are talking about are serious and real medical and psychological problems. As such they are covered by the Hippocratic Oath; "First do no harm."

It's one thing for me, Miley Cyrus, Kim Kardashian, Rihanna or whoever to muck about on the Internet. Gossiping about Eurovision, the Oscars even other celebrities.

The issues that Demi Lovato has to deal with are something you could not even contemplate addressing in that way. If I was a medical professional treating her I would be legally forbidden from sharing that information with anyone.

The same is true of what has been widely reported as Kanye West's Bipolar Disorder. Something which I might be able to give his, now, ex-wife Kim Kardashian some insight into. At least to help minimise the impact of the divorce on their children.

If Kim Kardashian were to do something like that. Then that would be the point where we would have to bring in military grade counter-surveillance measures. Something I'm more than capable of doing, even without Elon Musk's chequebook.

Of course if Kim Kardashian were to then share my insights with members of her social and professional circles. Then that would be her choice to make. Not mine.

So to my mind and, clearly, to the minds of a lot of other people.

Miley Cyrus and particularly Noah Cyrus' behaviour towards to Demi Lovato has crossed the line into the criminal. Reckless Endangerment bordering on Attempted Murder.

I don't really care whether the police in California get her for drink, drugs or driving. Noah Cyrus is going to actual prison for a good six months.

As for Demi Lovato's rapist. I'm surprised he's not currently re-surfacing a road somewhere.

All of which brings me onto what I thought was one of the stand-out acts of this year's contest;

At around 17:10 on 19/5/22 (UK date) I'll have to see if my anger can fade over dinner.

Eurovision 2022: Is Rock Really Back?

Saturday (14/5/22) saw the Grand Final of the 66th Eurovision Song Contest. Held in Turin, Italy.

The reason why it was held in Italy. Is that last year Italy won the 65th Eurovision Song Contest. With the song; "Zitti E Buoni" (Shut Up And Behave) by the band Maneskin.

Maneskin's victory was viewed unusual. As it is not considered to be your typical Eurovision song for a couple of reasons.

At its most basic the Song Contest is a song-writing competition. It is a celebration of the song-writers, the producers, the engineers.

All the people who are really the music industry. Even if you never get to see them on stage, in the spotlight.

It is the song-writer who must come from the nation being represented. They can chuck pretty much anything they want up on stage to sing it.

The Canadian singer Celine Dion famously helped launch her career by representing Switzerland at the 1988 Song Contest. The song; "Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi" (Don't Leave Without Me) was written by Nella Martinetti from Ticino, Switzerland.

It wasn't until 2016, when Poland asked if they could be represented by an actual Wolf. That it was formally clarified. If the performer is from planet Earth, then they must be a member of the Human species.

What attracts many song-writers to Eurovision is the challenge it presents. From its simple roots it has grown into a forum for nations to discuss the big political and social issues of the day.

Making each song not so much a song. As a musical statement about the big political and social issues of the day. However due to the Song Contest's golden rule. Those statements cannot be overtly political.

Really anyone good enough to work in the music industry can write a simple heartbreak love song. Particularly if they're allowed to get away with ever so slightly re-working someone else's song. Just ask Ed Sheeran.

However it is much more of a fun challenge. To see if you can write a not overtly political song about the finer, technical points of something like EU Directive 2019/790 on Copyright in the Digital Single Market. The so-called; "Meme Law."

So Eurovision songs tend to be packed with coded little references to political and social issues. Maneskin's entry was unusual in that it didn't. It was just a song they'd written anyway that Italy decided to enter into the Song Contest.

"Maneskin" is a Danish word meaning; "Moonshine." It was suggested by the band's bass player Victoria De Angelis, who is a Danish/Italian dual national.

Which sort of touches on EU integration. Particularly its core pillar; The Free Movement of Human Capital/People.

But not really as Victoria De Angelis is Italian born to an Italian father and Danish mother. So even without the EU she'd be free to live and work in both.

The band was formed while all its members were students at Rome's John F. Kennedy High School. Named after US President John F. Kennedy.

Which sort of touches on how the US Democrat Party are the Party of Slavery.

How it really took the assassination of President Kennedy to allow the US Civil Rights movement of the 1960's and 1970's to happen. Something which was always a dispute between different factions within the Democrat Party.

It's claimed that the band had to rush to pick a name. In order to perform at the 2016; "Pulse" contest for new bands.

Which sort of touches on the June 2016 mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Florida, US. Apparently just a normal part of the Party of Slavery's electioneering.

However all of these little references are a bit tenuous by Song Contest standards. They also come from the artist's biography. Although these are submitted in support of the entry, technically it is only the song itself that is considered the entry.

The only issue raised by the song itself is that it is done in a very 1970's Glam Rock style. Particularly in the way it was performed at the Song Contest.

This was in reference to one very specific performance of 1970's Glam Rock anthem; "Children of the Revolution" by T-Rex. The performance of the song by Elton John and Pete Doherty at the 2005 Live 8 concert.

This took place to put pressure on the Group of 8 (G8) nations. To accept the demands of the Jubilee-2000 campaign.

Allowing the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to introduce the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) Initiative. Initially cancelling some US$40bn of Neo-Colonial debt.

Pete Doherty's role in the concert was to serve as a metaphor for my, admittedly covert, role in that overtly political campaign. Essentially some singers did some songs, I did something else.

The faction within Britain who still believes in the likes of Elton John and Ed Sheeran. Have claimed ever since that my involvement and, therefore, the success of the campaign. Was the result of their magical superpowers. Their Jedi-like mind control tricks.

In the Opening Ceremony of the delayed 2020 Summer Olympics. Japan certainly granted me ample opportunity to dispel that particular myth.

An opportunity I feel I'm about to be granted again.

Although he's clearly still too thick to realise it. Elton John's performance with Pete Doherty in my role was actually done in mockery of that claim and him, personally.

The song he was given to sing seeming to say;

"Surely no-one could be so stupid as to ever believe in me."

It is part of the enduring success of the Song Contest. That it is utterly impossible to definitely say which song is the best. Allowing for constant discussion.

However there was some feeling that France's entry "Viola" (Here) by Barbara Pravi would have been a more deserving winner. As it was perhaps the better Eurovision song.

It was much more intricate in its design. The song itself included many detailed references to complex political and social issues.

Not only that it covered almost all of the issues that everyone else was talking about. Showing France's ability to understand the world around it.

So I think many people wanted to see France win and Italy come second. Including Italy and Maneskin themselves.

This isn't because we dislike Maneskin. In fact it is quite the opposite.

As it's not really understood by people outside of the music industry. The Song Contest and the performers who participate in it can get sneered at.

ABBA obviously helped launch their careers by winning the 1974 Song Contest. However since then the people who've been able to repeat the feat have been few and far between.

At the 2021 Song Contest Israel were represented by Eden Alere

Like all Israelis she had do a period of compulsory military service. However it appears as though she did most of that military service on the Israeli version of; "The X-Factor."

Perhaps a reference to how some already successful artists view having to appear at Eurovision. An unpleasant thing that they must do in service of their country.

Rock music fans, amongst whom Maneskin are trying to launch their career. Are the sort of people who are particularly likely to sneer at the Song Contest.

So we think it would be probably be better for Maneskin. If it appeared deep in their Wikipedia page that they once participated in the Song Contest.

Rather than having to carry the stigma of having to be introduced everywhere they go as;

"Eurovision Winners, Maneskin."

So rather than complaining that Maneskin won. I feel as though I should be apologising to them.

What appears to have elevated them above Barbara Pravi was me accidentally lending them some of the popularity of the success of the Jubilee-2000 campaign.

At Eurovision everyone's performance is always subject to review.

At around 17:15 on 16/5/22 (UK date) I'll have to pick this up tomorrow.

Edited at around 17:00 on 18/5/22 (UK date) to copy & paste;

Barbara Pravi performed in the style of Chanteur/Chanteuse. The fact that French is gendered language touched on Transgender issues and the current fad for ridiculous, self-selected gender pronouns.

The Chanteur/Chanteuse is a rather uniquely French musical tradition. They are sort of like buskers, singing songs in the hope of donations from passers-by.

However they would also sell the sheet music of their songs. Allowing people to sing the songs themselves, at home.

During the Pandemic Barbara Pravi's musical career was reduced to selling songs for people to use on the Chinese Social Media App; "TikTok."

Within the Chanteuse metaphor this made TikTok something of a; "Digital Silk Road."

There was much discussion that year about the old Silk Road trade route. Due to China's attempts to resurect it through its One Belt, One Road (Belt and Road) Initiative.

From the way Barbara Pravi sung about whether people were interested in her music or her beauty. I get the impression that the line between Chanteuse and Prostitute was always a fine one.

Touching on the sexualisation of women in the music and wider entertainment industry.

Really the most famous Chanteuse is Edith Piaf. She certainly portrayed herself as a prostitute in one of her more famous songs; "L'Accordenoniste."

About her dependence on her song-writer, the accordion player Michel Emer. Who, suddenly, became unavailable in 1940.

Edith Piaf was certainly very dependent on Michel Emer after the Second World War. It was him, as a Jew, speaking up for her which prevented her from being executed for treason and Nazi collaboration.

Here in 2022 I think everyone is sick of telling Miley Cyrus that story. Only to watch her go off and enthusiastically collaborate with the Nazis. Again.

Part of the reason why Edith Piaf is probably the most famous Chanteuse is that her career spanned the 1920's and 1930's. This was when it first became possible to record music.

Edith Piaf and other Chanteur/Chanteurse's embraced this new technology. Starting to sell records alongside sheet music. A technological advancement which fundamentally changed the way that music is consumed.

So I can now listen to Edith Piaf sing in my home, many years after her death. When, before, in order to hear her sing I would have to find the Paris street corner she was standing on.

Chanteuse are particularly famous for Torch Songs. Sentimental ballads about lost or unrequited love. A tradition which lives on in big divas like Celine Dion.

Torch Songs have, traditionally, been very popular amongst the Eurovision community. With even the bad ones still tending to do quite well.

In contrast Maneskin's winning song was a Rock song. Not even a sort of Eurovision impersonation of a Rock song. Just a song by a full on Rock band.

Rock is a genre which, traditionally, isn't at all popular amongst the Eurovision community. On the rare occasions it does feature it's normally a way for a country to tell all the other countries that they don't want to win.

So Maneskin's victory touches on something which has been long-running trend within the Song Contest.

In many ways the Eurovision Song Contest is the top echelon of the global gay community. It is certainly the most holy of the gay holidays.

Although you probably wouldn't be able to tell from watching western TV shows and movies. Obsessed as they are with; "Representation." Gay people only make up about 1-3% of the population.

A few years ago there was a mini-outrage. Over how homophobic is was that Apple's Tim Cook was the only openly gay CEO amongst the top 100 companies listed on the London Stock-Exchange.

I remember thinking. That based on sample size of just 100 then 1 is exactly the correct level of representation.

With them representing such a tiny proportion of the population the gay community is extremely small and tight-knit. The term; "Incestuous" has certainly been known to be used.

Due to, particularly, homophobia. Being accepted by the gay community is hugely important for any gay person.

With it replacing other support structures, such as family. Even those provided by the state, in nations where homosexuality is still illegal.

In order to be accepted by any community you have to adhere to its unwritten rules and conventions of behaviour. Obviously the easiest of these for a song contest to discuss is music.

Gay Music is almost an entirely separate genre in its own right. Made up of the Torch Songs of divas like Celine Dion. Alongside cheesy, vapid Pop and EDM. The line between Pop and EDM having become increasingly blurred across wider society.

Amongst the European nations which make up the bulk of Song Contest participants. The struggle for equal rights for gay people is over. They won. In no small part due to the work of the Song Contest.

So there isn't really this distinction between the gay community and wider society anymore. There's just wider society.

It's become something of a sign of this progress. That particularly gay men now feel secure enough in wider society that they can break the rules of the gay community. Saying;

"Actually I don't want to listen to Kylie Minogue. I want to listen to Guns N' Roses."

It turns out. Your sexuality only pre-determines who you want to have sex with.

Which brings me onto what I thought was one of the stand-out acts of the 2021 Song Contest.

Portugal (2021): "Love Is On My Side" by The Black Mamba.

I think by now we're all pretty familiar with the #MeToo campaign. Which has seen women share and protest their experiences of harassment and sexual violence.

However unless you are a French speaking gay man. Or someone who spends way too much time reading the news. You probably won't be aware of the offshoot campaign #MeTooGay.

This is largely gay men sharing and protesting their experiences of rape and sexual violence at the hands of other gay men. Something which I have to say is pretty endemic and tolerated within the, particularly gay male community.

Much of the discussion of #MeTooGay is over the extra pressure not to speak out. For fear of being seen to damage the cause of gay-rights and being shunned by the gay-community. A gay community which seems to refuse to police itself.

The lyrics and story of The Black Mamba's song are really dark. Even darker than their name. It's about a gay man being kidnapped, drugged and raped by another gay man.

It seems inspired by the; "Dembe Zuma" character from the US TV show; "The Blacklist." I can't remember the details of this fictional character's backstory. I'm not even sure if it was ever fully fleshed out.

However it involved him being a child solider in some West African nation. Then being captured and sold into prostitution.

At the age of about 12 he was found, chained, in a brothel by the sexually ambiguous main character; "Raymond Reddington." Who rescues him and moulds him into his adult friend and confident.

The lead singer of The Black Mamba is openly, and dare we say obviously, gay himself. However the well established band do not play Gay Music. Instead performing the sort of Soft Jazz Japan would really like.

So I thought Portugal's 2021 entry was incredibly brave. Raising a vitally important topic. In a way I was pleased to see it garner enough support to go through to the Grand Final.

Although I did wonder whether it was a topic best discussed in the week leading up to the Grand Final. Amongst people who understand what the Song Contest is about.

I was worried people, who are neither French speaking nor gay men. Casually watching the Grand Final might get the wrong impression.

While it is the top echelon of the global gay community and there is considerable overlap. Far from everyone involved in the Song Contest is gay. While there are a great many gay people who simply cannot stand the Song Contest.

So the Song Contest isn't really dominated by Gay Music. As much as by Eurovision Music. Which is a highly technical genre unto itself.

Things got particularly bad in the mid-2000's. When the Song Contest was opened up to all the new Eastern European nations.

They saw the Song Contest as a way to establish their identity and boost their profile. Slovenia has spent its entire modern existence being confused with Slovakia.

So they all did the song that they thought the Eurovision community would like. So they would be able to win the Song Contest.

The result was really just the same song being performed 40 times in a row. Which, in many ways, made it harder to tell the countries apart.

So recently there has been a few people sticking their hands and saying; "Can we just enjoy a good song for a minute?"

It's role as the top echelon of the global gay community. Has led to the Song Contest being seen as an exclusively gay event. Where only gay issues are discussed.

A particular low point was Azerbaijan's 2013 entry. "Hold Me" by Farid Mammadov.

This involved him singing while standing on a see-through plastic box. Within that box was a man in an all black bodysuit shadowing his every movement.

Azerbaijan is a former Soviet state. Some of that very repressive security infrastructure still lingers. Particularly for artists and other creative types who the Soviet system considered particularly prone to being subversive.

So the man following the artist's every move. Was a gentle protest against Azerbaijan's security infrastructure.

Except the gay community couldn't cope with that. As the Song Contest is an exclusively gay event where only gay issues are discussed.

So they decided that the man in the box was a metaphor for the singer's hidden homosexuality. As, apparently, everything is always a metaphor for everyone's hidden homosexuality(!).

The gay community kept arguing this point. Even with the people whose song it was.

This sort of seemingly brainwashed obsession with sex. Probably isn't the best image for the gay community to project to nations and societies which are still deeply homophobic.

At around 17:20 on 18/5/22 (UK date) I'll see if I can pick this up after dinner.

Edited at around 19:45 on 18/5/22 (UK date) to tidy all of the above and copy & paste;

It's difficult to say what the Song Contest should be. It was originally intended as a one-off televised singing competition.

However it does have a long history. Of being a forum for the European nations to discuss the big political and social issues they consider important to them at that time.

With it now being viewed by some as only a gay event. Where only gay issues can be discussed. It has rather moved away from that longstanding purpose.

To make matters worse the Song Contest doesn't really have a large gay fanbase. So much as a large gay male fanbase.

So despite all its claims to be inclusive and supportive of diversity. The Song Contest has been in danger of reaching a point that it is so discriminatory it even excludes half of the gay community.

In recent years there have been moves to encourage the Song Contest to broaden its horizons. Performing songs which aren't typically Gay Music has been an easy way for a song competition to do that.

This spectacle of a continent of nearly 800 million people. Having its diverse political and social priorities being reduced to serve the interests of just 1% of its population.

That can be used to serve as a metaphor for the growing global Wealth Inequality

With the richest 1% of the population owning wealth equivalent to that owned by the entire other 99% of the population. Then using that money to dictate the political and social agenda.

Although I will try and cover it more fully later. I think that is one of the points Malta were trying to make with their entry this year. "I Am What I Am" by Emma Muscat.

Emma Muscat being one of Malta's richest people. Rather like Rihanna these days fashion is her main job. Music is more of her hobby.

We're all casually interested to know what Miley Cyrus' new career will be. Now she's very clearly quit the music and entertainment industry.

Or possibly Malta were trying to use the wealth inequality issue. As a way to nudge the Song Contest into broadening its horizons. Emma Muscat is, very obviously, not a gay man.

Given that this is the Song Contest. I suspect it was probably a bit of both, at the same time.

The sort of thing which certainly isn't going to shock a Song Contest audience from its axis.

To be continued in Part 2.

20:15 on 18/5/22 (UK date).

Sunday 15 May 2022

Eurovision 2022: Hungover Sunday Edition.

Yesterday (15/5/22) saw the Grand Final of the 66th Eurovision Song Contest. Held in Turin, Italy.

The Song Contest is the big gala event of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).

Founded in 1950 the EBU is a network of 115 TV and Radio broadcasters across 56 nations. Along with 34 associate members spread across 21 nations.

Its mission is to promote unity amongst its members. While furthering technological advancement in the field of Information Communication Technology (ICT).

The EBU was founded six years before the launching of the first satellite, Sputnik-I, into space. Eighteen years before the invention of the first microprocessor. Marking the start of the computer age.

The first challenge the EBU set itself. Was to develop technology to simultaneously broadcast live TV pictures and audio across a continent.

It took them six years to achieve that goal. Leaving them with just one remaining problem. What to point the cameras and microphones at?

They settled on the idea of a singing competition.

Since then the Eurovision Song Contest has grown, massively. Into a forum for its participating nations to discuss the big political and social issues on the day.

Currently the biggest issue globally, certainly within Europe. Is Ukraine's Current Bothers.

This put the Song Contest into a very difficult position.

The window to submit entries actually runs from September through to March. Depending on when exactly in May the contest will be held. However most of the entries tend to be put together between December and February.

Ukraine's current bothers didn't explode until the end of February. Really putting it outside of the window that it could be discussed at the Song Contest.

Obviously, certainly since their killing of Ukrainian cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in October 2021. The US have been extremely vocal about their desire to attack Ukraine.

Really from late November 2021 onwards. The US had been giving near daily press briefings.

Not only informing everyone of their plan to attack Ukraine during the 2022 Winter Olympics. Held in Beijing, China. But also laying out the detail of how they planned to attack Ukraine during the Winter Olympics.

They were extremely vocal about how they were going to carry out attacks to the Donbas Republics on Ukraine's eastern border. Which, since 2014, have been independent nations under international law.

The US believed that this would force the Donbas Republics to invite a small Russian force in to protect them. Something which actually all members of the United Nations (UN) would be obligated to do under international law.

The US then hoped to use the arrival of Russian forces in the Donbas Republics as an excuse. First to impose the sanctions they've long fantasized about imposing on Russia.

Then as an excuse for Ukraine to invade and colonise the Donbas Republics. Similar to the offensives Ukraine launched against its new neighbours in 2018.

However even after NATO launched its first attacks against the Donbas Republics, on February 17th (17/2/22). There was still hope that the US and NATO could be stopped. War could be prevented.

Even after Russia's operation to protect the Donbas Republics had begun, on February 24th (24/2/22). It was still incredibly difficult to tell how the conflict would go.

Would it still be going at the time of the Song Contest? Would it be over, and if so, how would it have ended?

Due to Ukraine's oft repeated desire, including at the UN Security Council, to launch Nuclear strikes against Russia.

There was even some concern over whether there would still be a Europe at this point. Let alone a Song Contest.

NATO military analysts have repeatedly shown themselves to be incapable of answering these questions. Which prediction after prediction turning out to be false.

So it is a bit much to ask a bunch of TV and music people to make those sorts of predictions and answer questions such as those.

Also since the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest. We've, unusually, seen not one but two Olympics/Para-Olympics. A global forum for participating nations to discuss the big political and social issues on the day.

While Japan gave me ample opportunity to show-off. I think that we can all agree that the delayed 2020 Summer games were really heavy.

The 2022 Winter games ran from February through to March. Meaning that like NATO's attack on Ukraine which occurred in the middle of them. They were really outside the window for discussion at the Song Contest.

It is obviously difficult for Europe to respond to what China has said. When China has yet to say it.

So it was perhaps fortunate for the Eurovision community.

That at the time of the 2021 Song Contest I was resuming contact with Miley Cyrus, for the first time in about eight years. Exploring the possibility of some sort of relationship developing between us.

Almost as if they're part of that mass of match-making mutual friends. Who've being trying to shove Miley Cyrus and me together for the best part of a decade.

The Eurovision community were very supportive of a relationship between me and Miley Cyrus. While it was certainly the least important theme of that year's contest it was definitely one of the major themes.

With many nations using their entries to push Miley Cyrus and I further together.

They also warned the US/UK not to attempt to hijack any potential relationship. Explaining, in quite some detail, why any such plan was always going to fail.

Some even took the time to warn Miley Cyrus. Of what would happen to her life and career if the US/UK were able to hijack any potential relationship between us.

Miley Cyrus responded by not only allowing the US/UK to hijack our potential relationship. But enthusiastically helping them to weaponise the relationship against me and, really, the entire human race in general.

It was around this time that my father was admitted to hospital for major surgery. Which put me in contact with a lot of medical professionals and social workers.

None of these people seemed to have any interest in my father's health or care. They were much more interested in looking for evidence of my mental illness. In an effort to, effectively, imprison me for life without the formality or a crime, let alone trial.

A delusional belief that I am in a relationship with Miley Cyrus. Who hides secret messages just for me in her Instagram posts. Is exactly the sort of evidence all those medical professionals and social workers were looking for.

So really the only theme of the 2022 Song Contest. Hasn't so much been a discussion of how Miley Cyrus' life and career is going.

As a jostling for style points. For who can most elaborately break the bad news to Miley and the entire Cyrus camp.

Well, for everyone except the United Kingdom.

The United Kingdom (UK) used their time to boast about how fantastically well the past year has gone for them. While openly mocking me and my rather spacey mental health problems.

Obviously I hope the dark clouds of hangover will lift sooner, rather than later.

However at this point I genuinely cannot explain how the UK managed to come second. Propelled largely by votes from professional juries. The people who put together all the other entries.

I can only assume it was a Fat-Finger blunder. A simple data-entry error.

They meant to give the UK 0 points. Yet accidentally gave them 10 points instead.

Either that or they've made the mistake of trying to apply the standards of the sane. To people who are, clearly, anything but.

Obviously the US/UK believed that hijacking my relationship with Miley Cyrus would be the one thing that would make all their dreams come true. The big, bold move that see them achieve all of their objectives.

So by talking about Miley Cyrus. You're also able to talk about the specific objectives the US/UK were trying to achieve.

For example Albania were very interested in the US/UK's promise. That Miley Cyrus would be able to get me to talk about that 1999 "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" Samurai sword attack on my childhood Church.

Something which was intended as the UK's warning to NATO. About the threat posed by Albanian members of the Afghan Mujahedeen.

Which, at the time. NATO were using as part of, really, Albania's invasion and seizure of Serbia's southern Kosovo Province.

While Bulgaria were particularly focused on the disastrous NATO withdrawal from Afghanistan. Led by the US/UK's Kendall Jenner stalking, basement-dwelling, virgins.

As part of their entries nations also submit a biography of the artist. These can be quite lengthy, used to further add to the discussion.

For example Germany's entry this year is from Landsberg am Lech. Which is where Adolf Hitler wrote; "Mein Kampf."

It was also the site of a Nazi Concentration Camp. The liberation of which was portrayed in the US TV show; "Band of Brothers."

The US military then built an Air Base on the site. Where Johnny Cash became the first person in the western world to learn of the death of Josef Stalin.

It was a recurring theme of this year's contest. Just how sparse the artist biographies were.

Both Norway and Georgia just refused to even give their real names. We find it hard to believe that Norway's act were really born on the Moon.

This was in reference to how the US/UK had promised everyone. That Miley Cyrus would be able to get me to share the intimate details of my ex-girlfriends. All those Thrupple's, famous and otherwise.

Rather than being something Miley Cyrus would have to trick out of me. It's something I'd decided at the start I was prepared to just give to her.

My only condition being that we were allowed to talk directly and, relatively, discreetly.

So in their stupidity. The US/UK even managed to fail to pick up what I'd laid out on the table for them.

I'm sure that even those of us who have been actively ignoring her. Are aware that Miley Cyrus has been on something of a life journey.

New Wave been a small, short-lived but important genre in the history of music.

Funnily enough. The people involved in the Song Contest are actually quite into music.

Obviously I'm still far too hungover. To chart the decline of Punk and the rise of New Wave. Against western economies emergence from the Stagflation of the 1970's.

Let alone explain how Ukraine managed to win.

However I suspect their current bothers have attracted a mob of new voters. Unfamiliar with the fact that winning the Song Contest can often be a form of punishment.

They've joined Eurovision regulars. Who know that Nazi infested, belligerent Ukraine needs to be punished.
