With 24 gold medal up for grabs that is what today in the 2012 Olympics has been dubbed. So I'm trying to be as small and as quiet as is possible in an environment where even someone sending me a Tweet can cause trouble before I even read it.
However this morning the men's lightweight sculls rowing race had to be stopped after a seat in the TeamGB boat left broke leaving one of Britain's lightweight men without a seat to sit on. In English if someone is trying to argue an unsupportable position say in a court they are said to be "without a leg to stand on." Obviously it would be quite hard to explain why a TeamGB sprinter suddenly lost his legs in say of the 100m heats so being "without a seat to sit on" is the next best thing. Also in English a "lightweight" is someone who really can't take the pace being it in drinking or some other competitive pursuit. Therefore I think the boat incident was done on purpose in order to piggy back on double amputee South African sprinter Oscar Pistourious' historic appearance in the men's sprint events. White South Africans have a somewhat undeserved reputation for being very tough - the exact opposite of a lightweight. So by contrasting the boat incident with Pistourious the Brits were floating the idea that because they've been hung, drawn a quartered on the legal front they should step up their campaign against me and become even more aggressive. As for Pistourious it's mainly about the issue of technological solutions to disability in sport that will come up a lot in the para-Olympics. However I suppose you could say that I've been amputated from things in my life such as friends and support networks.
Later today TeamGB's men's soccer side will take on South Korea in a quarter final. This will be about global warming/climate change. As I've mentioned the COP18/CMP8 conference will take place in Doha, Qatar in November 2012. With the Doha being the place where big international efforts of this sort traditionally go to die and the hosts expected to be less then helpful South Korea in a significant break from protocol will be hosting a pre-summit amongst the nations who are at least prepared to be reasonable on the issue. As TeamGB are the better team on paper the quarter final should be an example of the Brits giving those troublesome South Koreans a damn good thrashing and the USA are also putting the screws on South Korea in the Apple V Samsung trial. However personally I feel a penalty shoot-out coming on.
16:00 on 4/8/12.
