Disaster ForTeamGB!

Nah, just kidding.

However today TeamGB's men's basketball squad were knocked out of the competition at the quarter-final stage by Australia 106-75. In slightly more dramatic team event news TeamGB's men's soccer side were also knocked out at the quarter-final stage by South Korea. I didn't watch the match but bizarrely for me I did manage to catch all the goals. South Korea opened the scoring with a trademark shot from outside the penalty area before TeamGB were awarded a penalty and equalised. Four minutes later TeamGB were awarded a second penalty which they missed so the score remained 1-1 throughout normal time and 30 minutes of extra time. This led to a penalty shoot-out that South Korea won 5-4.

The failures in the team sports were barely noticeable behind the track & field events in the Olympic stadium where there were golds for Jessica Ennis in the heptathlon, Mo Farrah in the 10,000m and Greg Rutherford in the long-jump although that was the shortest gold winning long-jump in about 40 years. The gold rush was added to by the rowers in the women's lightweight double sculls and the men's fours. In the Velodrome the women's pursuit team also got gold. Along with a clutch of other medals these 6 golds made it the single most successful day that Britain has had since the 1908 Olympics 104 years ago. It also propels them to third in the medal and first in the medal table that is adjusted to take account the size of a nation's population. More medals are guaranteed tomorrow in sailing and tennis events.

On a slightly more serious topic though police in London have charged a man (Nicholas Kutner, 47) in connection to the Carole Waugh case. You will note that they did not have the front to charge him in relation to the killing. Instead they've charged him with a variety of fraud offences related to withdrawing money from her accounts under false pretences, trying to rent her home/property under false pretences and trying to sell her home/property under false pretences. As it is strongly arguable that my father obtained power of attorney over my grandmother under false pretences by using it he could possibly be prosecuted for offences similar to those Mr Kutner has been charged with. Therefore the Brits are now using the Waugh case to suggest that prosecuting my father for fraud offences could be a way to put things right. Obviously from people who kill without thought or remorse this is simply a tactic to assess the Olympic visitor's feelings on the matter rather then a legitimate offer to put things right. However if it was a legitimate attempt to open a negotiation considering that the charges of perverting the course of justice against several judges could be used to destroy the criminal justice system while the charges of carrying out unlawful medical experiments could be used to destroy Britain's bio-medical industry I would say that the opening offer is far too low and directed at the wrong people.
