In the last 30 minutes or so a 7.9 magnitude earthquake has struck at a depth of around 28 miles in Costa Rica. Obviously it depends exactly where the earthquake has struck and the quality of the buildings in the area but an earthquake of that magnitude is going to do damage. Also it is being reported that a fire has broken out at the Fessenhiem nuclear power plant in eastern France. Obviously the earthquake is just an act of god/nature/the quantum field. It is highly unlikely that any government would be irresponsible enough to deliberately set fire to one of it's own nuclear power stations but it is possible to set fire to say the canteen at a nuclear power plant without endangering the nuclear parts. ThereforeI need more information before deciding either way but if the French fire was done on purpose it was to draw attention to issues such a nuclear safety both in terms of nuclear power (green energy) and nuclear weapons (Iran). However coinciding with an earthquake it's automatically becomes a discussion about Japan's massive 2011 earthquake and ensuing Fukishima nuclear disaster.

Edited at around 15:55 on 5/9/12 to add;
The epicentre of the Costa Rica earthquake occurred in a mountainous, rural area away from both the sea and any major population centres. Therefore no tsunami has been generated and there doesn't appear to be any major threat to life.
Likewise the incident at the Fessenhiem nuclear power plant is proving to be something of a non-event. Although the 'fire' did occur in one of the reactor buildings it was so small that the plant operators EDF are disputing that it was a fire at all. Instead they're claiming it was an admittedly worrying sounding 'unwanted chemical reaction' that led to the build up and release of steam. This steam set of the fire alarms and scalded two workers. Therefore I think this was simply Olympic sponsor EDF trying to sell more units by demonstrating that their nuclear power plants are so safe they feel confident enough to muck about with them. The reference to chemical reactions could be an attempt to draw more attention to six apartments in the Bolton area of the UK that were evacuated as an anti-terror raid uncovered suspicious chemicals that have now been declared. I'll deal with this in more detail later but it's basically one white guy mucking about with chemicals in his apartment rather then some massive Islamic terror plot.
