As you may have heard the eye of Hurricane Sandy is expected to make landfall in Southern New Jersey, USA at around 00:00 GMT (20:00ET) bringing with it sustained winds of 90mph. It will then meet a cold front bearing down from Canada which could well act as a blocking system keeping the hurricane over the most populated part of the US for the next three days. It will also be met by a snow storm from the west which is expected to dump 3-4 feet of snow per day over New York state, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky. This has been dubbed a "Frankenstorm" because it's made up of all the ugly bits of several different storms.
While the US was preparing for all this the Captain of the HMS Bounty decided to sail his replica of a 18th century tall ship into the eye of the hurricane of the coast of North Carolina with predictable results. This forced the US Coastguard to fly two helicopters into the hurricane in order to rescue 14 of the 16 crew. Perhaps deservedly the ship has been destroyed and sunk with 2 crew still missing but to be frank there's got to be a point when the Coastguard just go; "F*ck 'em."
Now because I don't have anything more of use to contribute to the situation I'm going to take the opportunity to keep quiet and I suggest people living in the affected areas do the same because we are seriously talking about 7 to 10 days without power and it might be around the fifth day you suddenly discover that you really need to use your smartphone as a phone.
20:00 on 29/10/12.
