Operation Ostrava: Month 16, Week 1, Day 7.

Over the last couple of days there has been a high volume of both diplomatic activity regarding Syria that I will cover in more detail tomorrow (14/6/12). However there have been two big developments that simply can not wait until then.

The first of these is yesterday (12/6/12) the head of United Nations Peacekeeping Operations Herve Ladsous finally admitted what everybody has known for the past 16 months. Rather then seeing a peaceful uprising being brutally crushed by government forces Syria is in fact in the grip of a full blown civil war with heavily armed insurgents battling government forces.

Also yesterday the United States of America criticised a Russian decision to supply the Syrian government with helicopter gunships. This criticism perfectly highlights all that is wrong with the US' and by extension the United Nations Security Council's (UNSC) approach to Syria. Over the past week or so the Syrian government has lost close to 200 of it's soldiers in battle with the Saudi Irregular Army (SIA). Therefore they need to deploy heavy weaponry in order to minimise their loss of life. Now they can either use indiscriminate heavy weapons such artillery and rockets or they can use smart weapons like helicopter gunships which are more targeted and therefore dramatically reduce the risk of civilian casualties. So if the US actually gave a damn about Syrian civilians rather then criticising Russia for supplying helicopter gunships they would be offering to help share the cost.
