Tuesday 1 March 2011

It's Tuesday.

And again I've been to the pub. As usual everything is OK and I'm a little bit drunk.

Unfortunately though I can't leave the situation is Libya alone though because today (01/03/11) the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) has called on the international community to co-ordinate flights to repatriate refugees from Tunisia. I would like to add my voice to that call because the estimated 1000 refugees per hour that are flooding across the Libyan border are threatening to seriously undermine the gains made by the Tunisian revolution.

Also last night (28/02/11) Libyan government forces attempted to re-take the centre of Zuwarah. In the first attempt they sent in lightly armoured infantry. This prompted the rebels to respond with heavy, anti-aircraft style, machine gun fire which killed four and forced the government troops to retreat. In the second attempt more government infantry went in backed by two tanks. The rebels responded by detonating at least one improvised explosive device (IED) which killed eight and force the government troops to withdraw to their positions in the suburbs.

This incident raises an important question because if the rebels had been the Taliban and Zuwarah had been an Afghan village what would US or UK troops do to re-take the town?
