Uruguay have knocked Ghana out of the World Cup. With the scores level after extra time it went to penalties and Uruguay won 4-2.
For a World Cup quarter final it was actually a really good game. Although I wouldn't go so far as to call it end to end stuff both teams really wanted to win and played an aggressive, attacking game. In the first half Ghana had the best of the play but just didn't have the strikers to score. Then in the 47th minute, 2 minutes into stoppage time, Ghana's Muntari had a shot from 30, possibly 40, yards out. This caught Uruguay's keeper by surprise and Muntai's shot had just enough curve on it to take it past Muslra's late dive.
In the second half Uruguay had the best of the early play but like Ghana just couldn't convert it into a goal. Then in the 55th minute Forlan got a free kick on the corner of the penalty area. He curled it across the goal and put it in the top corner. This equaliser drove Uruguay forward until tiredness took over.
This carried on into the dying minutes of extra time when Ghana had a shot blocked on the goal line by the arms of Suarez. For a deliberate hand ball that prevented a goal being scored Suarez was sent straight off and Ghana were awarded a penalty in the last minute (120th) of extra time. Gyan stepped with the chance to certainly win the match for Ghana and smashed the penalty straight into the cross bar and out of play.
That miss forced the game to go to a penalty shoot out. Uruguay scored their first two penalties will Ghana scored their first and missed their second. Uruguay then missed their third as did Ghana. Uruguay scored their fourth while Ghana didn't. The result sends Ghana out and Uruguay to play the Netherlands in the semi-final.
It's a bit hard to work out what's being going on in Big Brother because technical problems took all but the last 10 minutes of the eviction show off the air. I believe Sunshine was evicted though.
In less pleasant news there was a murder in my local area this morning. The incident occurred on Gypsy Road which can easily be confused with Gypsy Hill road which is right near where I used to work. It appears that four men drove up in a car, got out and then just stabbed a 15 year old boy to death. As far as I'm concerned this was a simple assassination carried out to spread panic and confusion across the first quarter final day of the World Cup. Of course the kid that was killed was black.
