The first rule of environmental science club is you don't talk about environmental science club. The second rule is Britain is currently preparing for the COp17 Summit that begins on November 28th 2011.
On Monday (31/10/11) a cliff in Porthkerry South Wales collapsed into the sea leaving dozens of Welsh homes literally hanging on a cliff edge. This is a classic example of coastal erosion and not totally dissimilar to desertification. It is also a process that can be helped along by the use of chemical agents similar to those used in hydraulic fracturing (fracking) and rare earth production.
On Friday (4/11/11) just as people were leaving the G20 Summit there was a multi-vehicle crash on the M5 motorway in the south west of England. Apparently at the time of the crash (20:25) the motorway was blanketed in un-forecast and extremely localised fog. On one side of the motorway the Taunton rugby club were holding a large bonfire party and fireworks display and on the other side there were several other bonfires being held in fields close to the road. As anyone who's noticed that the day after bonfire/Guy Fawkes night it's always cold, cloudy and damp knows the particles released by fireworks and bonfires can cause moisture in the air to condense creating fog. Initially it was reported that 27 vehicles were involved and 4 people killed. That has now been corrected to 34 vehicles and 7 dead.
Rather then sending out a message these two incidents seem designed to attract attention to Britain, cause confusion and cause people to assign their own meaning. So far it seems only the Italians have taken the bait.
