At around 08:00 Nigel Farage, the leader in all but name of the UK Independence Party (UKIP), took to the skies to parade the UKIP banner around Northhamptonshire. Shortly after take off the banner became wrapped around the tail of the light aircraft forcing it into a nose spin and an inevitable crash.
The pilot and Mr Farage are now in hospital with serious but not life threatening injuries. That is such an extraordinary way to start polling day that it can only be a genuine accident.
