Yesterday (31/1/12) a United States prepared report for NATO detailing links between Pakistan's Inter Service Intelligence (ISI) agency and the Afghan Taliban was leaked to the press. That Pakistan have links to the Taliban is well known and it is being done for more complicated reasons then simple Pakistan support for the Taliban cause. Pakistan is located between Afghanistan and India. Pakistan was formed out of a more or less Indian civil war in 1947 and the two nations have existed in a state of cold war ever since. India has close links to Hamid Karazi's Afghan government so Pakistan needs to keep links with the Afghan government's opponents in order to avoid it becoming sandwiched between two hostile nations.
The timing of the leak appears to be a US effort to put pressure on Pakistan during United Nations Security Council (UNSC) discussions on Syria. Those discussions will today (1/2/12) enter their second day and don't look like even getting as far as a vote.
