Although no-one has seen the body America has credibly announced that they have succeeded in killing Osama Bin Laden, the founder of Al Qaeda and the mastermind of the terrorist attacks on the United States that took place on September 11th 2001. Apparently Bin Laden was hiding in Pakistan when on May 1st (1/5/11) a US special forces team raided his camp killing him and a number of other people. His body was then transported back to Afghanistan where the kill was confirmed before the body was buried at sea in accordance to Islamic ritual.
Although this is a major victory for the Americans and a major set back for Al Qaeda it is unlikely to have major impact on the war in Afghanistan where NATO is fighting the Taliban. Also Al Qaeda was set up to be a leaderless organisation and it's always being thought that Bin Laden, an old man with health problems intended to die shortly after the September 11th attacks anyway.
