Today (10/11) the National Union of Students (NUS) staged a march through Westminster, central London to protest against a proposed tripling of university tuition fees. What was meant to be a rather tame A-B march ended with a rally at around 13:00.
Then a group of about 1000 protesters decided to march on Millbank tower, which houses the offices of the governing Conservative party. This took the police completely by suprise and the protesters were able to break through thin police lines and smash their way into the building through the glass frontage. They are now occupying the building and the street outside while setting fires and breaking things. The police are currently calling up re-enforcements from across London while they attempt to surround the building and contain the protest. Given that Millbank tower is quite a large building with multiple exists they're going to require a lot of officers to achieve that.
