Over the course of last night a fire completely destroyed the 120 apartment Grenfell Tower on the Lancaster West housing estate in the Kensington area of the UK city of London.
Investigators have not yet been able to enter the remains of the building so it is still far to early to speculate on the cause of the fire. However it certainly sets off a lot of political alarm bells.
As I seem unable to stop talking about the UK held a General Election on June 8th (8/6/17). According to polling taken as recently as May 20th (20/5/17) the Labour Party was facing not only certain defeat in this election but utter humiliation.
Then on May 22nd (22/5/17) there was a terror attack on the UK city of Manchester. This was followed up by another terror attack in the London Bridge area of London on June 3rd (3/6/17).
The Labour Party seemed to treat these twin terror attacks as gifts. They used them to launch completely irrational attacks on the incumbent Conservative Party government.
This caused a substantial swing towards the Labour Party so although Labour did not win the election they were able to win enough seats to deny the Conservatives a majority and the UK a government.
The Manchester attack occurred on the fourth anniversary of the May 22nd 2013 (22/5/13) murder of British soldier in the Woolwich area of London. As I said at the time this is an extremely sensitive topic for the UK security services. It links in to the riots that gripped the UK in August 2011.
What made the August 2011 riots so shocking was that there were many different riots all occurring in different parts of the country all at the same time. Each of these riots had their own characteristics.
For example in the Hackney area of London the rioters main objective seemed to be to attack the police. In the Clapham area of London the main objective seemed to be large scale looting and theft.
In the Croydon area of London the main objective seemed to be the widespread destruction of property through arson.
Today people have been saying that they've never seen a fire like the Grenfell Tower fire. Those people clearly don't remember the Croydon riots which saw entire city blocks burnt to the ground.
The Croydon area of London has long been a target for the Labour Party. I think they captured the Croydon North seat in 1997 and ever since have been trying to capture the Croydon Central seat.
The buildings burnt to the ground in the Croydon Central seat during the 2011 riots were predominately privately owned homes. These tend to be occupied by people who vote Conservative. They were replaced by large tower blocks full of rented apartments. These tend to be occupied by people who vote Labour.
In 2015 Labour cut the Conservatives majority in the Croydon Central seat to around 120 votes. In this recent election Labour were finally able to capture the Croydon Central seat.
So Labour's gains in Croydon are undoubtedly the result of the damage caused during the 2011 riots. There remains a persistent question amongst intelligence agencies over whether the Labour Party orchestrated that property destruction in order to gain a political advantage.
At the June 8th election the last seat to be declared was the Kensington & Chelsea seat in west London. After several recounts this was finally declared as a Labour win over the Conservatives by a majority of just 20 votes.
Obviously the Grenfell Tower will have to be replaced. Changes in building regulations since the 1960's mean that Labour's Mayor of London Sadiq Khan will be able to replace it with a building that holds far more people in a larger number of smaller rented apartments.
If conventional wisdom applies that should increase the number of Labour voters within this key marginal seat.
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has already decided to exploit the fire by appearing on TV to use it as an excuse to launch an attack on the Conservative government.
Corbyn seems to have neglected that within London housing is the responsibility of Labour's Sadiq Khan.

Edited at around 18:50 on 14/6/17 (UK date) add;
Another of Labour London Mayor Sadiq Khan's extremely limited responsibilities is over the London Fire Brigade.
This is managed through the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority. This is obviously responsible for employing fire fighters. However it also sets the regulations under which the Fire Brigade can issue fire safety certificates to buildings such as Grenfell Tower.
A longstanding Labour member of the Fire and Emergency Planning Authority is one Emma Dent Coad. A doctor of architecture Emma Dent Coad is also the newly elected Labour MP for Kensington & Chelsea. Emma Dent Coad stood for election on an anti-gentrification platform.
In short "anti-gentrification" means giving corporations such as the Kensington & Chelsea Tenant Management Organisation (KCTMO) who own Grenfell Tower public money to build more rental accommodation.
